Furukawa Rock Drill’s history began with the redesign of imported handheld rock drills used at the Ashio Copper Mine, tailored to better suit Japanese workers in response to the needs of miners.
For over 100 years, FRD has continuously refined its core “drilling” technologies.
By integrating these capabilities with its “crushing” and “breaking” technologies, FRD continues to provide products and services that support customers' success while meeting their diverse needs, thereby contributing to the construction of social infrastructure around the world.

Ashio Copper Mine
Takasaki Works

1875: Began operation of the Kusakura Copper Mine in Niigata Prefecture (founding of Furukawa Co., Ltd.)
1877: Began operation of the Ashio Copper Mine in Tochigi Prefecture
1885: Began using rock drills to excavate mine cavities.
1887: Established a workshop at the Ashio Copper Mine, commencing machinery repair and manufacturing
1900: Established a machine works at the Ashio Copper Mine, expanding into the machinery business
1914: Developed Japan’s first hand-held rock drill,
1950: Constructed the Tasaki Works in Gunma Prefecture
1961: Established FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL SALES CO., LTD. (present-day FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL CO., LTD.)
1962: Began overseas exports
1971: Constructed the Yoshii Works in Yoshii Town, Gunma Prefecture (present-day Takasaki City)
1976: Developed first hydraulic breaker
1977: Developed first hydraulic crawler drill
1977: Developed first hydraulic drill jumbo
1989: Established Ashio Rock Drill CO., LTD. as the successor of ASHIO KIKAI Co., Ltd.
1990: Acquired an American rock drilling machine manufacturer
(present-day FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL USA, INC., Ohio)
1991: Began sale of Hydraulic Crushers
1998: Established FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL EUROPE B.V. in the Netherlands
2000: Merged FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL SALES CO., LTD. and FURUKAWA CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY SALES CO., LTD. to form FURUKAWA MACHINERY SALES CO., LTD.
2003: Integrated Furukawa Drill-Tech Co., Ltd., a subsidiary, into FURUKAWA MACHINERY SALES, Co., Ltd.
2003: Established FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL KOREA CO., LTD. in South Korea
2005: Integrated the rock drill manufacturing plants (Takasaki Works, Yoshii Works) of Furukawa Co., Ltd. to establish FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL CO., LTD.
2006: Established “FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL (SHANGHAI) CO., LTD.” in China
2008: FURUKAWA PLANT CONSTRUCTION CO., LTD. in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture renamed FRD IWAKI CO., LTD. to become a group company of FURUKAWA CO., LTD.
2011: Established “FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL INDIA PVT. LTD.” in India
2012: Established FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL LATIN AMERICA S.A. in Panama
2014: Miyako Mini Branch opened in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture
2016: FRD Alps Mini Branch opened in Matsukawa Town, Shimoina District, Nagano Prefecture
2018: Established FURUKAWA MACHINERY ASIA SDN.BHD. in Malaysia
2018: Began in-house maintenance of hydraulic breakers (attachment products) in the Tohoku and Kansai regions
2022: Dissolved two sales companies in Panama and China
2023: FURUKAWA ROCK DRILL USA, INC. established a new service and logistics base in Nevada
2023: Established FRD KITA-KANTO CO., LTD., a maintenance service company in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture
